Elon Musk on patents: “too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress”

Well whaddaya know, here I am, near-unknown blogger writing (post1, post2) about IP Seizure and how patents are working to lock up innovation, and along comes Elon Musk to back me up here. Quote from Mr. Musk: “When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors.

Wow. Coming from a guy who’s started more successful tech-oriented companies than I have suits, that’s saying something. OK, I don’t have a lot of suites. But still.

Anyway I think this says more than anything that Musk is a guy who is out to actually make the world a better place. Ya almost don’t mind billionaires when they do stuff like that (lookin’ at you, Bill “wipe out another disease this year” Gates!)
